About Harshana Rajakaruna
Harshana Rajakaruna is a Member of the Sri Lankan Parliament from the Samagi Janabalavega. He represents the Gampaha District.
Harshana was born in 1980. He started his primary education at Royal College. During his school career, he was nominated as class monitor, house captain, junior prefect, senior prefect and deputy head prefect. He was also actively involved in sports, especially cricket, where he was adjudged ‘Best Bowler’ at the Royal-Thomian Big Match in 1999. He also had the privilege of being appointed as the founding President for the Group of ’99.
After completing his primary and secondary education at Royal College, He went for his tertiary education to the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, where he obtained a Degree in Management Studies (BA). Thereafter, he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom.
After his return to Sri Lanka he became involved in the social work of his father Sarath Chandra Rajakaruna’s electorates- Dompe and Attanagalla in the Gampaha District while working as a Senior Investment Advisor at John Keells Stock Brokers. As a member of the Executive Committee, National Youth League Working Committee, Sports Committee, Economic Committee and Buddhist Committee of the United National Party he was able to talk with, mingle with and understand the needs of the people in the Gampaha District.
He officially started his political career in 2009 when he contested the Western Province Provincial Council Election from the Gampaha District. He was placed second in the UNP list of Gampaha District. He was elected at the top of the UNP list of Gampaha District at the 2014 Western Provincial Council Election. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Chief Opposition Whip of the Western Province Provincial Council.
He was elected to parliament during the 2015 general elections. He is presently the Assistant Organizer of the opposition. Assistant secretary of the Samagi Janabalavega and President of the Young Professionals Association
